Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 3 Apr. 1919.
Wm. J. Stemmer, a prominent farmer of Volga township living about a mile east of Communia, was instantly killed near his home yesterday afternoon at about six o'clock.
The accident was not witnessed by any one but as near as we can learn Mr. Stemmer hitched a young and spirited team to a farm wagon and went to another part of the farm. In a little while members of the household noticed a disturbance in the barnyard and the team was found there fairly screaming with fright. A search revealed Mr. Stemmer lying not far away with his head badly crushed. Apparently he had been thrown from the wagon as it passed over a water break and his head had struck a post with tremendous force.
Dr. Brown was immediately summoned from Littleport but his death had probably been instantaneous.
Mr. Stemmer was a man of high character and a successful farmer. He will be sadly missed from the community. He is survived by his wife and three daughters, a brother and two sisters, besides other relatives.
The funeral services will be held at the home on Saturday, April 5, at one o'clock p.m.
