Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 2 Jan. 1919. Fairview column.
Ilo Hazel, the only daughter of Llewellyn and Letty Oldham, was born Feb. 23, 1901 and died in the Finley Hospital, at Dubuque, on December 7, 1918, lacking but two months and 16 days of being 18 years old. Her death was caused by a failure of the heart to sustain the severe strain following an operation for appendicitis, and was a distinct surprise to all except those most familiar with her, few knowing the need for the operation.
Ilo was born here in this community. Here she grew to womanhood; her schoolmates and her girlhood friends are our boys and girls; we have all known her as a baby, a child, a girl, and a young woman. We know her lovable traits of character, her vivacity. Words cannot tell the loss in the home nor the sorrow of many near relatives and other friends.
She completed two years in the High School at Colesburg and was entering upon her third year, but was compelled to stop because of an attack of appendicitis. She united with this church when a girl of ten. During the last month she has faced the possibility of what might be the outcome of the operation and her sense of an appreciation of her God asserted itself with increased vigor. Many times after the operation she repeated the prayer beginning "Our Father". During the last hours she prayed for her pastor and told her parents of her trust in her Saviour. It was her request that in the prayer at her funeral services her pastor remember all ministers everywhere that they might be faithful in their messages.
The funeral services were conducted from the Fairview church by the pastor Rev. Riggs.
