Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 9 Jan. 1919. Strawberry Point column.

Martha J. Smith was born in Whitesboro, Oneida Co., New York, May 20, 1830. When she was three years of age her parents, Joseph and Martha Smith, removed to Chenango Co. where they resided for a short time from where they removed to Madison Co. near Eaton. Here her girlhood days were spent. She received her education in the schools of Lebonan and Bowkville.

She was married to Henry Whitmarsh of Windsor Mass., Jan. 22, 1849, and lived at Eaton N.Y., for six years, coming west in 1855. They settled in Mazomanie, Wis., and a year and one-half later came to Independence, Iowa, where they resided three years. In 1859 they settled on a farm in West Buffalo Grove near what is now Aurora, Iowa. While visiting the old home in Mass. in 1861 Mr. Whitmarsh died.

She returned with her two children, William and Stella, now Mrs. Jas. Barker of Sheridan, Ore. Very bravely she faced the hardships of pioneer days always looking on the bright side.

On the 21st of Feb., 1866, she was united in marriage to Geo. A. Jakway of Buffalo Grove, Iowa, where they lived until 1887 when they came to Strawberry Point. Mr. Jakway died here on March 18, 1891.

Since that time Mrs. Jakway has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Harry Scofield. She passed this life Dec. 25, 1918, after a short illness.

There remain to mourn her loss W. H. Whitmarsh of Strawberry Point; Mrs. J. Barker of Sheridan, Okla.; G. H. Jakway of Lamont, Iowa; Frank Jakway and Emma Jakway of Aurora, Iowa; and A. T. Jakway of Oelwein, Iowa; also Mrs. Harry Scofield of this place. She is survived by many grandchildren.

Mrs. Jakway lived to a great age being in her 89th year. She was always loved in the neighborhood in which she lived, being familiarly known as aunt Martha throughout the whole countryside at Buffalo Grove where the beautiful farm home which she graced was home to everyone. Her health was always robust throughout her life, but during the last few years feebleness of old age had been somewhat apparent, yet she never complained.

Hers was a sweet and happy life. She was an inspiration to her children and to all who knew her. The heroism of her quiet life of a true mother was hers. Funeral services were held at the home in this city Dec. 27th conducted by Rev. L. A. Bradford, of Ames, formerly pastor of the M.E. church of this place and a much loved friend of the family. Burial at E. Buffalo cemetery.
