Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 4 Dec. 1913. Local News column.

Franz Lembke was born Sept. 20th, 1837, at Viershof, Lauenburg, Germany. In May, 1871, he immigrated to this country and came to Clayton Center, of this county. There he was united in marriage with Louise Krueger on June 15th of the same year. This union was blessed with nine children, two of whom died in infancy, and preceded their father to the haven of eternal rest.

For twenty years the family lived in and near Clayton Center, when they moved on a farm northeast of Elkader, now owned by George Bente. After the boys had grown up and had farms and families of their own, the parents, who by this time were well advanced in years, sold their farm and moved to the place which has been their home ever since. This was nine years ago. By hard work and wise economy they were enabled to take life somewhat easier.

Mr. Lembke had always enjoyed good health until about three years ago, when he had an attack of neuralgia, which caused him intense sufferings at times, but he recovered sufficiently to be around and about again, when in July of this year a nervous trouble, together with the infirmities which old age are apt to bring along, again confined him to the house. He received the best of care from his family and especially from his faithful companion who was at his bedside day and night, to minister to his wants.

But in spite of all the vigor and strength of body began to fail visibly until he was relieved of all earthly afflictions on Tuesday, Dec. 2nd, at five o'clock in the morning, at the age of 76 years, 2 months and 12 days.

His departure is mourned by his life's partner, Louise, three sons and four daughters, viz. Fritz, John and George, of Read township; Mrs. Margarethe Lamker, of Monona; Mrs. Lizzie Kill, of Boardman township; Mrs. Mary Hulverson, of Elkader, and Emma, at home. He also leaves ten grandchildren, one half-brother, Frank Jarms, of Monona, and many friends, who will all miss him as one worthy of love and esteem.

Funeral services, which were largely attended, were held this afternoon at one o'clock from the house and at 1:30 at the German church, Rev. C. H. Franke officiating. Interment in the East Side cemetery. May he rest in peace.
