L. H. Place passed away Monday evening, August 18th, at the home of his nephew, Col. E. R. Place, in Winnemucca, Nevada. He had been in poor health for several years and had been confined to his room since last fall.
Lucius H. Place was born at Highgate, Vermont, 72 years ago. At the age of 17 years he went to Boston, where he entered a clothing store as a clerk, remaining in that capacity for some time.
In 1858 deceased moved to Elkader, Clayton County, Iowa, where he engaged in the livestock and general merchandise business with his brother, R. C. Place, which partnership was continued for many years. Later he was elected sheriff of Clayton county and served in that office for six years after which he engaged in buying livestock for several years. For the last few years he has made his home with his nephew, Col. E. R. Place, at Caldwell, Idaho, and Winnemucca, Nevada.
Mr. Place had never married, living much of his life with relatives and friends. He joined the Odd Fellows forty years ago, since which time he had taken great interest in that order.
His remains were brought to Elkader for burial and arrived Saturday evening, accompanied by A. M. Williams, of Winnemucca.
The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon in the East Side cemetery, under the auspices of the I.O.O.F., Rev. Franke offering prayer.
Mr. Place is survived by three brothers, H. J. Place, of Highgate, Vt., E. K. Place and E. G. Place, of Minneapolis, Minn.; one sister, Mrs. Lucy A. Wilder, of St. Albans, Vt.; several nephews and nieces, among whom are Mrs. L. F. Gossmann, Col. E. R. Place and Elmer Place, and other relatives. He was highly thought of by those who came in contact with him either in a business or personal way.
