Word was received here Monday morning, Aug. 4th, 1913, from Chicago, telling of the death of Mrs. James Hawthorne, which occurred in that city early that morning. Mrs. Hawthorne was visiting relatives and while here was taken ill. She was removed to the hospital, where a surgical operation was performed upon her but she never regained consciousness. Abbie Morley Hawthorne was born in the year 1853 in Feeding Hills, Mass. On the death of her parents, she, at the age of four years, came west to Iowa to live with her uncle, Wm. R. Morley, in Fayette County. She was married to James Hawthorne, of Volga City, about thirty years ago. Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church Tuesday morning, conducted by Rev. Piper, of the M.E. church. The Ladies' Aid of the Presbyterian church attended in a body. Burial in Volga cemetery. Mrs. Hawthorne was a consistent member of the Presbyterian church and was a hard and faithful worker in all that was for the building up of her church. She was a woman who was always willing to help anyone in trouble. Her many friends were grieved to hear of her death.
