Thomas Hines, the son of Samuel and Elizabeth Hines, was born in Sangamon County, Illinois, on January 15, 1837 and died at his home in Clayton county, Iowa on February 20, 1918 at the age of 81 years, 1 month and 5 days. He was one of a large family of whom some died in infancy and Louis, Lydia, Margaret and Susie in later life. Henry, Hiram and John are still living in the vicinity of the old home.
About the year 1870, at Elkader, Iowa, he was married to Augusta Bensley, and to them were born three sons, Edward, Albert and William, all of whom lived near to their father. These sons, a number of grandchildren and his three remaining brothers are all who are left to mourn for him.
The deceased has lived on the farm where he died for a great many years, his parents having some to the state in an early day. He is well known, and though eccentric in character, possessed some sterling qualities and he will be missed by a great many people.
The funeral services were held in the Christian church at Cox Creek, on Feb. 22nd, conducted by the Rev. S.C. Bretnall of Edgewood, Iowa and the remains were laid away in the Cox Creek cemetery.

Note: records indicate that Thomas & Augusta were divorced and he was remarried to Mathilda Letts. They also divorced. Augusta has been found in records as both Augusta Smith and Augusta Bensley.
