Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 8 May 1913. Guttenberg column.
On Wednesday afternoon Herman Nieland, a pioneer resident of Jefferson township, was in some way accidentally burned to death while burning brush on his farm. While his son William and family were in town Wednesday afternoon the old gentleman went into the timber and engaged in burning brush. In the evening, when his folks returned from town, the unfortunate one was missing, and a search for him was at once begun about the farm, and he was found dead in the timber about 11 o'clock Wednesday evening, his clothes being all burned. Dr. A. E. Beyer was at once called but all to no avail and the body was taken to his residence, where a coroner's inquest was held Thursday. Deceased was about 83 years of age and was born in Germany and later came to the United States. He was a resident of Jefferson township for many years, being successfully engaged in farming. His wife preceded him in death several years ago. His death is deeply mourned by three sons and one daughter, namely: Herman, William, Mrs. Jos. Behrens, of Jefferson township, and Ben, of near National, and a large circle of relatives and friends, by whom he will be sadly missed, as he was a kind and true father and friend, always willing with heart and hand to help those in need. Funeral services were held Saturday morning at St. Mary's church in this city, Rev. J. H. Brinkman officiating. Interment in the Catholic cemetery.
