Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 1 May 1913. Guttenberg column.
On Friday, at his home in this city, occurred the death of Wm. F. Meyer, at the age of almost 31 years, the cause of his death being lock jaw. Deceased was born in Hussum, Germany, on May 8, 1882, and came to the United States several years ago. About two weeks ago, while being employed at the hardwood sawmill in this city, he had the misfortune to get his hand in a saw, which caused same to be badly cut up and it was at once necessary to amputate the thumb and one finger of the hand. The unfortunate was doing nicely and was able to be up and around until last Wednesday, when lock Jaw set in and on Friday morning he passed away. On October 21, 1910, he was married at Postville to a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Block, of this city, later coming to Guttenberg, where he lived until his death. His untimely death is deeply mourned by his widow, one son, his parents in Germany and a large circle of other relatives and friends, by whom he will be sadly missed, as he was a kind and true husband, father, son and friend. Funeral services were held at St. john's Lutheran church in this city on Monday afternoon, Rev. Janzig officiating. The funeral was largely attended. Interment was made in the city cemetery. The family has the sympathy of the entire community.
