Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 10 Apr. 1913.
William John Theodore Wolter was born at G_____ow, Mecklenburg, Schwerin, Germany, Feb.16th, 1842. On the 9th day of April, 1869, he was united in marriage to Miss Sophia Caroline Becker. Five days later the young married couple set sail for America and came to Clayton County, Iowa, which has been their home ever since, with the exception of three years, from 1909 - 1912, when Mr. Wolter visited with his daughter Lena, at Oldham, S.D., and Louisa, at Underwood, N.D., one year at the former and two years at the later.
After his return in December of last year he has made his home with his children, for the last few months with his daughter, Mrs. Elmer Peake, of Cox Creek township, where he received the best care.
On Monday afternoon, March 31st, the old gentleman started out to call on some old friends and neighbors but never arrived at his destination. The next afternoon, after having wandered about aimlessly for over 24 hours, he was found in an exhausted condition, and was taken to the home of his daughter, Mrs. Fred Stahl, near Osborne. A doctor was called immediately and the best of care given him, but his appointed time had come. He died on Wednesday morning, April 2nd, at the age of 71 years, one month and sixteen days.
He leaves his wife, Mrs. Sophia Wolter, nine children and twelve grandchildren. Two boys preceded their father in death in May, 1883. The eight daughters and one son still living are: Mrs. Lena Anderson, Oldham, S.D.; Mrs. Louisa Becker, of Underwood, N.D.; Mrs. Carrie Stahl, of Osborne, Iowa; Mrs. Elmer Peake, of Osborne, iowa; Mrs. Ida Fliehler, of Volga, Iowa; Mrs. Minnie Baker, of Strawberry Point, Iowa; Mrs. Emma Meyer, of Mason City, Iowa; Miss Sophia Wolter, of Osborne, Iowa; and Paul, of Glenwood, Iowa.
Funeral services were held on Friday morning, April 4th, at the home of Fred Stahl, Rev. Franke, of Elkader conducting the same. Interment was made at the Communia cemetery.
