Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 27 Mar. 1913.
The death of John Dinan occurred Sunday morning, March 23rd, at about 10:30, after a brief illness. He had purchased the Mahr livery property as announced last week and was planning improvements, when on Wednesday of last week he was taken suddenly ill with peritonitis. Medical skill and careful nursing was unable to check the disease and it progressed rapidly to the end.
John Dinan was born in Cox Creek township in this county on Feb. 14th, 1868, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Dinan, and has spent practically his whole life in this section. Some years ago he moved to Elkader and engaged in business with Henry Koehn, retiring from business a little over a year ago.
He was united in marriage with Miss Ida Meder, of Mederville, and to them have been born nine children, eight daughters and one son, all of whom, with the mother, survive to feel the untimely loss of the husband and father. He is also survived by his aged mother; four sisters, Mrs. Patrick Downey, Mrs. Richard Leonard, and the Misses Delia and Jennie Dinan; four brothers, James, of Elkader; Michael and Lawrence, of Littleport, and Jeremiah.
Funeral services were held Tuesday morning at St. Joseph's church, Requiem High Mass being celebrated by Rev. Father Donlon, of Cedar Falls, assisted by Father Dowling, of McGregor, and Father Reilly, of Elkader, and were attended by relatives and many sympathizing neighbors and friends. Interment was in St. Joseph's cemetery at this place. Many beautiful floral offerings, including a cross of roses presented by the Elkader Aerie of Eagles, attested to the high esteem in which he was held.
The deep sympathy of our entire community goes out to the stricken relatives, especially to the widow and the fatherless children in their great bereavement.
