The many friends of Joseph Marsh, of Strawberry Point, were grieved to learn of his death, which occurred at his home at eight o'clock Saturday evening. He was a resident here for several years and has a great many friends, who sympathize with his aged wife and his family, who are left to mourn his loss.

Joseph Marsh was born March 27, 1825, at Chalmsford, Essershire, England. He lived at the place of his birth during the early years of his life, but his parents dying in his early boyhood and being thrust upon his own resources he went to London at the age of twelve. In London he learned his trade, that of a house decorator.
In December, in the year 1849, he landed in Boston, from thence he went to Webster, Mass., where he met Mary Ellen McCracken, who later became his wife, and who remains to mourn his demise. They were married on the evening of Dec. 24th, 1852.
They soon moved to Worchester, Mass., where they lived for three years, moving to Volga City in Iowa in the year 1855. From thence they moved to a farm in Fayette County, where they lived for nearly forty years. After two years residence in Sheldon they moved to Strawberry Point in 1896.
He was the father of eleven children, seven of whom survive him: Mrs. Hattie Loomis, Georgetown, Minn.; George Marsh, Oelwein; Miss Fannie Marsh, Strawberry Point; Mrs. Jennie Fergeson, Bryant, S.D.; Clarence and Laurence, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Mrs. Lottie Morley, of Beaver Dam, Wis. Twenty-five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren survive him.
A year ago all members of the family were home for the sixtieth wedding anniversary at the Christmas tide.
He died at his home last Saturday night. He would have been 88 years old had he lived till March 27th. Funeral services were held at the home Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. L. A. Bradford, of the Methodist church.
