On last Saturday morning, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Henry Wistrick, occurred the death of Wm. Bente, one of our pioneers. During the last few weeks of his life he visited all his old time friends and neighbors. He came to this country from Germany in 1838, landing at Dubuque. A few years later he came to these parts and has resided here ever since. At the time of his death he was nearly __ (looks like 98) years of age. The funeral services were held at the home Monday afternoon at 1:00 o'clock, by Rev. Leonhard, of Elkader. Interment at the Communia cemetery.

At the home of his daughter, Mrs. Henry Wistrick, in Cox Creek twp., early Saturday morning, Oct. 12th, occurred the death of Wm. Bente, Sr., at the advanced age of 98 years.
Deceased was born in Hanover, Germany, March 15th, 1809, and coming to the United States in 18__ (looks like 1844), located on a farm in Cox Creek twp., where at one time he owned 900 acres.
He was one of the pioneers of that township and was the first man to bring a threshing machine to that section. In 18_7 (looks like 1837) he was united in marriage with Mary Hillman, who died several years ago. To them were born nine children, four of whom survive, Herman, William, Louis and Mrs. Henry Wistrick.
Three sons, Herman, William and Henry served in the Civil War, William being wounded at the battle of Pittsburg Landing and was discharged, but re-enlisted, and Henry was killed at Louisville, Kentucky.
Uncle Billy lived to see a large family of great-grandchildren grow up about him, all of whom are prosperous.
The funeral was held Monday, Rev. F. Leonhard, of Elkader, officiating. The interment was at Communia.
