Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 10 Oct. 1907.
Word reached here Monday evening that Mrs. H. W. Hackelman, formerly Miss Bessie Miller, of McGregor, had been drowned in the Mississippi River, just below the city.
There is no cause known as yet, why she committed the rash deed, being cheerful and apparently happy that morning. She left her six months old baby on a bed at the home of her mother, where she had been visiting, and quietly left the house unobserved. A few hours later her lifeless body was found in the river. The deceased was about 23 years old, a graduate of the McGregor high school and Winona Business College. She was married about two years ago to H. W. Hackelman making their home at Appleton, Wis. She leaves to mourn her death besides her husband and baby, her mother, Nan Miller, a brother Henry, station agent at Postville, and a sister, Miss Jessie Miller, of Seattle, Wash. The grief stricken family have the sympathy of the entire community, where the deceased was well Known.- Monona Leader.
