Margaret Hayes was born in County Wexford, Ireland, December 19, 1824, and was called to her last home on October 6, 1907, in the eighty-third year of her age. On April 25, 1850, she was joined in marriage to Edward Copeland. Five children were born to this union, Joseph, Edward, John, Eliza and Minnie, two of them, Edward and Eliza, together with her husband, preceded her to the better land. After the marriage they came at once to begin life in the new world. They went first to Rutland county, Vermont, where they remained for four years and moved from there to McKelsport, Penn. In 1859 they came with the pioneers to Iowa and settled in Highland township. Here they made their home for twenty-three years, moving then to Volga City, where Mr. Copeland died in 1885, and where Mrs. Copeland lived until her death. Grandma Copeland united with the Episcopal church in her youth and upon coming to Highland she became a charter member of the Presbyterian church in that neighborhood and was a firm believer in Christ until her death. One brother, three children, eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild are left to mourn her loss. The funeral was held from the Presbyterian church at Volga Oct. 8th, interment in the Volga cemetery, Rev. McKuskey, of Hopkinton, conducting the services. The following persons were in attendance at the funeral from out of town: Jos. Copeland and wife, Margaret and Joseph J., of Cresco; Mr. and Mrs. McCready, of Perry, Iowa; Mrs. Stamp, of Elgin; Elmer Copeland and Edward Copeland, of Cedar Rapids; and John Hayes, of Cedar Falls, Iowa.
