Maria Elizabeth Ziegler, nee Bierbaum, was born June 14, 1840, at Wissengen, Province of Hanover, Germany. In the spring of 1847, she came with her parents to Clayton county and settled near Garnavillo. On Dec. 6, 1862, she was married to Geo. Ziegler. After their marriage they lived at Garnavillo, then at McGregor, and later they removed to Grand Meadow township, this county.

Mr. Ziegler died March 12, 1893. Their union was blessed with eleven children, of which three preceded her in death in infancy. Mrs. Ziegler came to reside in Monona eight years ago last December. She died after a brief illness at her home on Tuesday, September 17, 1907, at the age of 67 years, 3 months and three days. She is survived by five daughters, three sons, two aged brothers, and many relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at the Congregational church last Friday, conducted by Rev. H. Haag and Rev. B. H. Cheney, and interment was made at the Luana cemetery.
