Elkader Register, Thur., 29 Aug. 1907. Guttenberg column.
A young man named Joseph Schmidt, of Holy Cross, whose health had been failing the past few weeks and who came to Guttenberg last Saturday to receive treatment from Drs. Duffin Bros., passed away suddenly in their office about noon Tuesday from paralysis of the heart. Less than a half hour before he left the Needham hotel, where he was stopping, and it was observed by those who were at the hotel at the time of his leaving that he was very weak. He walked to the physicians' office a block and a half distant unaided, but upon reaching there was exhausted and immediately lay down on a couch in the office where he expired in a few minutes. Restoratives were immediately applied with hopes of restoring life, but without avail.
