Elkader Register, Thur., 29 Aug. 1907.
After an extended illness Fred Opitz passed away at his home in Boardman twp. early Friday morning, Aug. 23rd.
Mr. Opitz was born at Klein-Eberdorf in Saxony, Germany, Dec. 31, 1836. In 1868 he came to this country and on Oct. 10th of the same year he married Bertha Planer. The first four years in this country Mr. Opitz resided in Elkader, then lived in Highland township for several years, and for the last 30 years has lived on a farm in this township. Seven children were born to them of whom four are living: Mrs. Henry Thillen, of this township; Max, of Elkader; Richard and Emma at home. Mrs. Alma Monti, Sylvia and Bertha preceded the father in death, as did his brother Louis, all in the past seven years, the grief stricken family having had more than their share of trouble.
Mr. Opitz was a respected citizen, industrious, and one who was held in high esteem by his neighbors. This was shown by the large attendance at the funeral held Sunday afternoon. The services were held at the Congregational church, Revs. Leonhart and Hock officiating.
The pall bearers were Messrs. J. C. Hagensick, Jans. Tieden, Henry Wistrick, Jacob Miller, Martin Dittmer and David Schoeppe.
