Elkader Register, Thur., 6 June 1907.

At his home north of town on Tuesday night May 28th, occurred the death of Emil Wegner, one of the pioneer residents of the township. Mr. Wegner had been in feeble health for years.

Deceased was born on March 3rd, 1824, in Drossen, Saxony, Germany. He learned the miller's trade and in 185_ (looks like 1853) came to this country locating at Elkader. He was employed at the Elkader mill for twelve years. He then removed to North McGregor for two years, after which he returned to Elkader and since then has resided on the farm two miles north of town. His first wife was Mary Keen, who died in 18__ (looks like 1869), leaving him four children: Mrs. Louis Meisner, Mrs. Richard Leonard, Mrs. Frank Meisner, and his son, Louis. His second wife was Carolina Hamann, who with three sons, Ernest, Charles and Fred, is living.

The funeral service was held on Friday, with interment in the East Side cemetery. Rev. Leonhardt conducted a service at the house and the German Gesang-Verein sang appropriate songs. The remains were escorted to the cemetery by Elkader Lodge No. 72, A.F. & A.M. and consigned to their last resting place with the rites of the order. Mr. Wegner was a Mason for over fifty years, having received the third degree in Elkader Lodge May 16, 1855, two years after the institution of the local order.
