Mrs. Margaret Sloan was born in Carluke, Lanark-Shire, Scotland, Feb. 11th, 1837, and died at Volga City, Iowa, May 5th, 1907. She was the daughter of Samuel and Christina Sloan, and was married to William Sloan June 1_th, 1853. In April, 1855, they came to Dundee, Ill., where he followed farming, and the next year moved to Highland twp., Clayton Co., Iowa. Mr. Sloan died May 1st, 1880. Mrs. Sloan resided on the home farm until a few years ago, when she purchased a residence in Volga City and has lived there ever since. Mrs. Sloan was an estimable woman and was kind and charitable to all. She was a good neighbor and mother, and was loved by all who knew her. She united with the Free church of Scotland at the age of ten years. After coming to America she joined the United Presbyterian church. She afterward united with the Presbyterian of which she was a faithful member when she died. There is left to mourn her loss three sisters, two in Scotland and one in Denver, and seven children, viz: Catherine and David, at Audubon, Iowa; Helen, Sam and Christina, of Volga; Robert, near Arlington; and William, at L___ (looks like Lima). The funeral was held at the Illyria church on Tuesday afternoon, Rev. W. H. Ensign, of Manchester, conducting the services. There was a large attendance. She was buried beside her husband.

(Note: She and her husband have a dual gravestone in Illyria cemetery, Fayette Co., which can be seen on the IGPP.)
