Added by S. Ferrall 1/3/2024:

On Saturday afternoon death came suddenly to J.H. Presho, one of our oldest and most highly respected citizens, causing profound sorrow to his many friends, for Mr. Presho was a man who was honored and well liked by all who knew him.

He had been ailing for the past two years with rheumatism, but in that time he was never considered seriously ill and in fact, when he retired from the city council two evenings before his death, no one dreamed that this would be the last time his cheerful presence would be felt among those who had the town's welfare nearest at heart.

Rheumatism of the heart was the direct cause of the taking away of this good man and he passed away at 3:30 April 6th without realizing that he was standing in the valley of the shadow.

John Henry Presho was the son of William and Mary Presho and was born in New York City Jan. 1st, 1843. Early in life he came with his parents to McGregor and in 1862 he was married to Salina Geroux, of Prairie du Chien.

Eleven children were born of this union, three of whom have preceded the father in death. Charles died Sept. 13th, 1886; Harry, July 3rd, 1892 and Jennie (Mrs. Chas. Brooks) April 17th, 1904.

The surviving children are Will, John, Ray and Sidney, Hattie (Mrs. S. Houle) of Milwaukee; Jessie (Mrs. Joe Sievers) of Dubuque; Irma (Mrs. Henry Cleveland) of North McGregor, and Miss Sadie of Dubuque.

In August 1861, Mr. Presho enlisted as a volunteer of the civil war with Co. B, 21st Iowa Infantry. He improved well his time while in the service and was honorably discharged after the siege of Vicksburg.

His funeral was conducted by the G.A.R. Post of McGregor on Tuesday afternoon and was largely attended. His interment was at Oakland cemetery where ---
Sadly, ah sadly! we laid him to rest,
One more time the line of the blue,
Who marched at the call of that he loved best,
To fight with the loyal and true.
One more from the ranks fast dwindling away,
Leaving memories sweet of the brave,
Loving hands, fail ye not, on Memorial Day
With a wreath and a tear for his grave.

Card of Thanks
We desire to express our heartfelt thanks to all the friends who so kindly assisted us in the burial of our loved one. - Mrs. John Presho and family.
