Elkader Register, Thur., 14 Mar. 1907. Guttenberg column.

August Huene died at his residence Tuesday evening, March 5, at 7:30, at the age of forty-three years, five months and 25 days.

Mr. Huene had been suffering from chronic diabetes for several years. Several weeks ago he became afflicted with paralysis of the throat, but was able to be up and around until Saturday when he was attacked with pneumonia, which hastily released him from his suffering.

Deceased was born September 10, 1863, near Bloomington, Wis. He was a son of Jacob and Julia Heitmann, who moved to Guttenberg when he was a babe. His father was drowned while crossing the river soon after moving here. At the age of eight years he was adopted by Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Huene. After Mr. Huene's death he became the owner of his father's mercantile business, which he conducted for a number of years and after closing out his stock engaged in the saloon business until the spring of 1905.

Mr. Huene took great interest in the town's growth and prosperity and along with the progressive citizens was ever helpful in securing needed improvements and industries. He had served as councilman, and as mayor in 1899 and 1900.

He was married Sept. 10, 1884, to Miss Lizzie Collet, daughter of the late Fred Collet. He is survived by his wife and four daughters who deeply mourn the loss of a loving husband and kind father. The daughters are Mrs. John Schoenauer, Clara, Julia and Anna. He is also survived by his brother, Henry Heitmann, and his mother, Mrs. Julia Felder, who, besides Henry, has ten other children living. They are: Joseph, Frank, Mrs. R. E. Kirschbaum, Mrs. Susan Stoeffler and Tillie Felder, of Guttenberg; John and William, of Ipswich, S.D.; Peter, of St. Joseph's Ridge, Wis.; Mrs. Mary Hampton, of near Glen Haven, Wis.; and Mrs. Minnie Westermeyer, of Dyersville.

Deceased was a member of St. Clement Branch No. 23, R.C.M.P. Society. The funeral services were held Friday morning at 9:00 o'clock at St. Mary's church. Interment was in the Old Catholic cemetery.
