Elkader Register, Thur., 21 Feb. 1907. Volga City Views columns.

Mrs. Rebecca Jane Wattenbaugh was born and raised near Volga City, Clayton county, Iowa, on Nov. 8th, 1862, and died on the 19th day of February, 1907, at her farm home in Fayette County, Iowa, at the age of 44 years, 3 months and 11 days.

She was married in 1882, on June 20th, and to Thos. McCrea, who was called to his eternal home on the 18th day of February, 1890. To this union one child was born, Addie May.

She was again married to Frank Meyers on the 27th of January, 1892, and one child, Joseph Francis, was born to this union.

Thus from our midst has been taken a loving wife and a devoted mother, and although we grieve, yet we know that we shall meet our loved one again, where sickness, pain and death are unknown, and where there will be no more partings and the word good-bye is never spoken. She has been a sufferer for four years and during that time has borne her affliction with patience as only those can who put their trust in God. Having made peace with her Maker, she often spoke of death as being a relief from her suffering.

She leaves to mourn her departure a husband, two children, an aged mother, two brothers and three sisters, her father and one brother having gone before. We cannot understand the reason that we should be bereft, but

Wrapped in the midst of the future
Hidden from mortal eye,
Are the plans of an All-Wise Father
Who knoweth the reason Why.

The funeral was held at the Presbyterian church at Volga City Feb. 21st, 1907, Rev. Dr. Smith officiating. Burial in the Volga City cemetery.

(Notes: The obit names her second husband as Frank Meyers, but a Card Of Thanks following the article was signed by Frank Meyer and Children. Also, the WPA lists a T. McGrae, 1863 - 8 Feb. 1890, buried in Hill Crest cemetery. A possible match for Rebecca Jane Meyer/Meyers first husband.)
