Died - Of consumption, Monday, August 13, at the residence of his son-in-law, Mr. Timothy Foley, in Farmersburg, JOHN H. FRANCIS, aged 77 years, 7 months and 9 days.

Mr. Francis was born at Goshen, Leitchfield Co., Conn., January 4th, 1800. He emigrated to Clayton county in 1838, where he arrived the 28th day of July. In the summer of 1845 he located in Farmersburg township, where he resided at the time of his death. He enjoyed largely the confidence and esteem of his fellow citizens, and was much respected by all who knew him. In the vigor of his life he was actively and warmly interested in all matters of public good, and a ripe judgment and culture enabled him to act well any part asigned him. For several years he was probate judge of Clayton county, and for many years a justice of the peace in Farmersburg townhip, always filling his official trusts with ability and fidelity. In religious faith he was a Baptist. His funeral was largely attended, including several of the "old settlers" from adjoining townships. The service was conducted by the Masonic Lodge of National, of which he was a worthy member, assisted by brethren from the adjoining lodges of Elkader, Garnavillo, and Monona. Rev. Downs of National, officiated as chaplain, and preached the funeral discourse. In his death Clayton county has lost another of her oldest settlers. Thus, one by on, they leave us, and soon the last connecting link of pioneer life in this county will have passed away. Sacred be their memory, and peace to their ashes.
