Peace comes to those having lived a life of devotion to family, friends, church and the nation. Saturday morning, February 18th, about 10:00 a. m., Mrs. Anthony Grady (nee Mary Burns) passed peacefully to her reward after attaining the advanced age of 94 years. The happy expression on her face personified in death what was hers in life.
Mrs. Grady was born in Clare Island, Mayo County, Ireland, May 10, 1834. She was married sixty-five years ago to Anthony Grady and together they came to America sixty years ago, settling in that part of Marquette, now known as Twin Bluffs.
To this union, six children were born, four of whom preceded her in death, as also her husband who died about twelve years ago. The two surviving children, Michael E. and Kathryn B. are residents of Marquette. Never were there children more devoted to their mother than in this family. Kathryn has been constantly with her mother during the declining years, and four years ago, gave up her position in our school, so as to be by her mother’s side.
In 1884, Mrs. Grady’s niece, Mrs. Richard Welch died, leaving a son one year old. Mrs. Grady took this son to raise. After attaining manhood, he too, passed away Aug. 7th, 1903. Everybody who knew Mrs. Grady, loved her for her amiable disposition and her love for all humanity.
She was not however, so well acquainted with the younger generation, on account of her infirmities keeping her from social activities. Through it all in her last few years of close confinement, she endeavored to make herself worthy of the constant love and devotion of her daughter, by keeping her disposition sweet as ever. Funeral services were conducted at St. Mary’s church, Monday morning, with Father Horsfield officiating. In fitting words, he paid tribute to the beautiful life and the consolation that was hers through her faith. Many were the floral offerings, and a large concourse of friends of this well loved pioneer, followed the remains to the last resting place.
Those from out of town, attending the funeral were Mrs. Goheem, Calmar, Iowa; Miss Celia Welch, Gays Mills, Wis., and Mrs. Kate Geraghty, Monona, Iowa.
