Elkader Register, Thur., 14 Feb. 1907. Monona column.
Justice J. Henkes was born at Bessa, Hesson, Germany, Feb. 1_ (looks like 15), 1829. When quite young he came to America with his parents and settled in Lorain county, Ohio. In 1852 he was married to Martha Jonkman. Two years later they immigrated to Clayton county, by team, and have since resided here. He died at his home in Monona township on the evening of Jan. 29, 1907, at the age of 77 years, 11 months and 14 days. He is survived by a widow, five sons, two brothers and many relatives and friends who mourn his departure. Thus has gone another one of Clayton county's pioneers to the great beyond. The funeral services were held last Friday forenoon, at the Roberts Creek church and the remains laid to rest in the Evangelical cemetery, Rev. H. Haag, of Monona, officiating.
