Through friends at Farmersburg we learn of the death of Major H. Burnham, formerly a resident of this county, at his home in Yankton, S.D., at the age of 76 years. He was born at Thedford, Vermont, September 1st, 1840, and responded to the call of the West when a young man, coming to Clayton where he engaged in carpentry and later farming. He served his country with distinguished honor during the Civil War. On July 4th, 1867, he was married to Miss Anna O'Brien, who, with two sons and a daughter, survive him. They are William Burnham, of Winner, S.D.; Daniel Burnham, of Spencer, S.D.; and Mrs. John Hosch, of Ortonville, Minn. Three sisters and a brother are also living: Mrs. Ellen Jones and Mrs. Adelaide Marsh, of McGregor; Mrs. Ann Harrington, of Postville, and Francis Burnham, of Farmersburg. Mr. Burnham was a man who commanded the respect and esteem of all who knew him, one of the sturdy type of pioneers who meant much to Clayton county in the earlier days. He was a member of the Masonic lodge and had attained the thirty-second degree. The funeral services were held at Spencer, S.D., and he was laid to rest in the Spencer cemetery.
