Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 17 Feb. 1916.
Mrs. Henry Reimer passed away at her home in Read township on Saturday, February 5th, at 3:15 p.m., at the age of 30 years, 6 months and 28 days.
Magdalena Anna Louisa, daughter of Joachim Kuehl and his wife Dorothea, nee Zacher, was born July 7th, 1885, in Volga township, Clayton county, Iowa. When grown to womanhood, she was united in marriage with Henry Reimer on Oct. 27th, 1903. At first they made their home in Volga township, but after about eighteen months they moved onto a farm in Read township, which has been the home of the family ever since.
It is self evident that the rearing of the children and the various household duties caused much work and worry and put the mother to great responsibilities, but gladly, without complaining, would she perform the manifold duties as long as she was able and had the strength to do them.
Two years ago, on February 2nd, 1914, she underwent a severe operation, after which it took quite a while for recuperation of strength and vitality, but it could be perceived that she was gradually getting stronger. This was glad tidings for the family and her many friends and all hoped that she would soon regain the long wished-for strength.
On Monday, January 31st, she began to complain about pains in her head. One ear and later one side of her face showed a little swelling. No one thought this to be a serious matter, they took it for granted that it was some form of the grippe, which is prevalent at present as an epidemic throughout the country, but as her condition grew worse from day to day, a doctor was called, who diagnosed it as erysipelas. A trained nurse was called at once so that the patient could have the best care and everything possible was done to prolong the life of the beloved wife and mother, but all efforts were in vain. God in His unsearchable wisdom had willed it otherwise. He called her home out of this world of sorrow and affliction on Saturday, February 5th, at 3:15 p.m., in the prime of here years.
Her departure is mourned by the grief-stricken husband and his five little children, viz.: Florence, aged 10 1/2 years; Marie, 9 years; Dorothea, 7 years; Bertha, 5 years, and Louise, the baby, 2 1/2 years. She also leaves her aged parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joachim Kuehl, of Elkader, and the following brothers and sisters: Joe Kuehl, of Boardman township; Mrs. Sophia Schroeder, of Volga township; Herman Kuehl, of Elkport; Charles Kuehl, of near Littleport; John Kuehl, of Volga township; William Kuehl, living near Littleport; and Henry Kuehl; also the aged father-in-law, Karl Reimer, of Minneapolis, Minn., and other relatives and many fiends.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 8th, the Rev. Franke officiating at the house and delivering the English sermon at the St. Paul's Church, in Garnavillo, while Rev. Braun spoke in the German language at the church and had charge of the services at the grave.
