Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 13 Jan. 1916. Monona column.
On Thursday evening, December 30th, at 10:30 p.m., occurred the death of Christoph Bierbaum, at Monona. Johann Christoph Bierbaum was born January 7th, 1828, at Wissingen, in the neighborhood of Osnabrueck, Germany, and soon after his birth was christened. After attending school and receiving due instruction the deceased was, at the age prescribed in Germany solemnly confirmed. In 1845 he emigrated from Germany to Ohio, where his brother Gerhard was working. In 1846 the two brothers came to Clayton County, Iowa, and settled on a farm south of Garnavillo. In 1846 it gave much joy to his heart to have his beloved parents, two sisters and two brothers come from Germany to this country to live here in his neighborhood.
On January 22nd, 1858, he was united in marriage to Miss Florentine Marie Johanningmeier. The young couple settled on the well-known homestead near Ceres. Here they did real pioneer work, going through many hardships of early life. To this richly blessed and happy marriage 13 children were born, of which eight preceded him in death. On January 22nd, 1908, in the presence of his children, he celebrated the golden wedding with his beloved wife. Nearly nineteen years ago (in April, 1897), they bought a nice home in Monona, where since that time he enjoyed the evening life. About three weeks ago he became sick, bronchial pneumonia being his illness. The deceased was 87 years, 11 months and 23 days old. He leaves to mourn his loss his bereaved wife, five children, namely: Mrs. Elizabeth Pufahl and family, near Monona; Heinrich Bierbaum and family, in Cass county, Iowa; Christoph Bierbaum, at Buffalo, N.Y., and Mrs. Clara Pufahl and children, near Ceres; Edward Bierbaum and wife, in Idaho, and numerous other relatives and many good friends.
The funeral services were held at the German Lutheran Church at 12:30 p.m. Monday, January 3rd, 1916, Rev. Otto Wappler conducting the services. Burial in the family lot in the Lutheran cemetery.
