Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 13 Jan. 1916. Garber column.

It is our sad duty to relate the death of Mrs. John L. Hansel. She died last Sunday afternoon after an illness of over three months. Deceased was almost sixty-eight years of age and has lived on the old homestead for a good many years. She leaves to mourn her loss her husband, John L., besides her son Robert, and daughters, Mrs. Bradley Learn, of Garber, and Mrs. Joe McDowell, of Edgewood. Mrs. Hansel had a host of friends who will miss her. The bereaved family has our sympathy in their great loss. The funeral was held on Wednesday morning, interment at Brown cemetery.

(Note: WPA records indicate this is reference to Mary L. Hansel, 1848 - 9 Jan. 1916, buried in Brown Cemetery.)

Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 20 Jan. 1916. Elkport and Vicinity column.

Mary Bowman was born on January 11th, 1848, in Monroe county, Pa., the daughter of Samuel and Catherine Bowman, and died January 9th, 1916, at the age of 67 years, 11 months and 28 days.

She was baptized in the Presbyterian church and grew to womanhood in her native state.

In April, 1867, with her parents, she came to Clayton county, Iowa, which has been her home ever since.

In June, 1868 she was united in marriage to John L. Hansel and proved herself to be a tender and faithful wife, a loving mother and a kind neighbor, whose friendly spirit won for her friends wherever she went, and to her children she has left many happy memories of her love and devotion to comfort them in their grief and loneliness.

She was sick only a few weeks when death claimed her. All that loving hands and medical skill could do to ward off death was done, but all to no avail.

Her death is deeply mourned by her husband, one son, Robert Hansel, three daughters; Mrs. Lizzie Learn, Mrs. Myrtle McDowell and Mrs. Oral Hagemann, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, one brother, James Bowman, and three sisters; Mrs. Emily Noack, Mrs. Anna Guinn and Mrs. Lottie Brown, and a large number of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at her home, Rev. Baldwin, officiating. Interment in the Brown cemetery. The funeral was largely attended by relatives and friends. May she rest in peace.
