Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 27 Apr. 1916.
William Susie was born June 30th, 1843, at Pommer, Germany.
He had two sisters and three brothers, one living in Oshkosh, Wis., one in Brazil and the other still in Germany. As a young man he served his time as a soldier. In 1864 he fought in the war between Germany and Denmark, and in 1868 in the war between Germany and Austria.
He emigrated to America in 1868 and in 1874 was married to Margaret Schroeder at Elkader.
Six children were born to this union, four girls and two boys, all living but one, who died in infancy. For a while after he was married he lived on a farm near Strawberry Point, but later came to Volga, where for many years he has made his permanent home. He was a member of and confirmed in the Lutheran church, which church he always attended whenever there was a Lutheran service in the city. Several years ago his eyesight began to fail, and for five years he has been totally blind, and with the failing of his eyesight, his hearing left him also, and for the last two years he has been quite deaf. Mr. Susie has been sick for nine weeks. The end came to him not unexpectedly but he longed for and looked toward his release. I went to him and gave him his last sacrament, and in every way he indicated that he was willing and glad to go.
He leaves to mourn him a wife, two sons, three daughters and three grandchildren, all of this city. Funeral services were held from the M.E. Church Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock and interment in Hill Crest Cemetery.
Thus ends the brief of the life of William Susie, a soldier of the Prussian regime, a member of the Lutheran faith, honest to the penny in his dealings with men and missed by those who knew him best, and the world is enriched by the estimable family he has left behind.
