Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 1 Jun. 1916.
On Thursday, May 25th, 1916, this community was shocked to learn that Emil Winkler, the blacksmith at Wood, had been called home, he, who but a short time ago had gone to Edgewood, accompanied by his faithful wife, in order to seek counsel and advice from his physician. Mr. Winkler had been ailing for some time and chronic troubles were aggravated until slight strokes of paralysis attacked him, yet his ambition was greater than his powerful physique and he worked until his strength finally waned and he could work no more.
He was born November 11th, 1862, in Germany, and was married to Miss Rosa Lehman in 1881 and they, with their family, came to America, locating at Elkport, Iowa.
To this union four children were born, two sons and two daughters, one daughter preceding the father in death.
They moved to Wood about sixteen years ago, where he followed his trade, he being 53 years, 6 months and 14 days of age at the time of his death.
Rev. Heiserman, of Edgewood, conducted the burial services at the house and thence to the cemetery in Edgewood.
He leaves to mourn his loss his beloved wife, one daughter, Mrs. Henry Beeh, of Elkport, and his sons, Joe and Charles, of Wood; also a nephew, Ernest Winkler, of Elkport, and other relatives and numerous friends.
Those who attended the funeral from a distance are Chris Beeh, wife and son Philip, of Elkport; Ernest Winkler, of Elkport; Wm. Schultz and wife, of Littleport; Rudolph Rentschler and wife, of Elkport; Mr. Elvers and wife and Otto and Alvina Elvers, of Osborne.
