Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 20 July 1916.

Edward M. Paul passed away about 9:15 last evening at his home in this city. He had been seriously ill for about two months with heart trouble.

Edward Mac. Donald Paul was born in the town of Phelps, N.Y., on October 12th, 1845, and consequently would have been 71 years old next fall. At the age of nine years he came West with his parents and located in McGregor, where his father was engaged in the butcher business. A few years later they moved to Giard, at the time called Bulls Head, where they kept a hotel until his father's death in March, 1866. Then he and his mother returned to New York, where he entered Bryant & Stratton's Business College in Albany, from which he graduated. In 1870 he again came West with his mother and located on a farm in Giard township.

On January 1st, 1876, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Ehrlich and to this union was born one child, Mrs. G. H. Wilke, of Elkader.

In 1881 he gave up farming and engaged in the grain and stock business at St. Olaf, where he also held the position as agent for the railroad company. In 1892 he was transferred to Elkader as agent, in which capacity he worked up to the time of his illness two months ago.

He was a most obliging and genial agent, always ready to assist in any way, and ready to serve the public even at his own inconvenience.

He has a host of friends who will sympathize with the bereaved family, and was held in high esteem by the entire community. He was always a respecter of religion and a regular attendant at church, and during his illness requested baptism, which was administered by Rev. Cassel of the Congregational Church, to whom he also at the same time made a profession of his faith.

He is survived by his wife, who has ben his constant companion in his work, and one daughter, Mrs. G. H. Wilke, of this place, and three grandchildren, Phyllis, Paul and Dorothy, all of whom composed the family circle. The community has lost a good man and valuable citizen.

The funeral services will be held at the Congregational Church next Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock with interment in the East Side cemetery.
