Andrew Jackson Butts was born Dec. 8, 1833, at Lawrence, Otsego Co., N.Y., and departed this life June 19, 1916, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Edmund DeGraw, at Monona, Iowa.
Aug. 1, 1853, he was married to Eliza DeFarce, of Northeast Erie Co., Pa. They returned to York state where they lived till in the spring of 1856, when they came west to LaPorte, Ind., where they lived one year.
In the spring of 1857 they came to Waukon, Iowa, moving to Franklin township in 1867, where he lived the greater part of the time till four years ago, when he came to make his home with his daughter, Ella DeGraw, in Monona.
His wife died Feb. 17, 1881. To this home eight children were born, only two remaining: Mrs. Ella DeGraw, of Monona, and Mrs. Anna Skipworth, of Omaha, Neb.
Since the death of his wife he has made his home with his children. In September, 1862, he answered his country's call for volunteers and enlisted in Co. F., 6th Iowa Cavalry, being mustered out in August, 1865. He was a kind husband and a good father, an honest, industrious man. Several years ago his eyesight began to fail and for three years he has been helplessly blind.
The funeral was held at the M.E. church Wednesday, June 21st, the pastor, Rev. James B. Bird, officiating. Interment at Hardin, where most of his family were buried.
