Miss Sarah A. Crawford was born April 22, 1830, at Fredericktown, Madison Co., Mo., being one of a large family, her childhood days were spent on her uncle's plantation, where she grew to womanhood, thus knowing something of slaves and the cotton fields of the South.
She was married to John S. Brock at Galena, Ill., in 1847. To this union were born ten children, Salanda M., dying in infancy, and Lizzie A. Clapp who preceded her in death.
Mr. and Mrs. Brock came to Iowa in 1855, settling on a farm near Guttenberg which was their home for 38 years. Here Mrs. Brock endured with heroism all the sorrows and hardships of pioneer's wife. From this place they moved to a small farm near McGregor, where Mr. Brock died August 20, 1897.
Mrs. Brock then left the farm residing in McGregor for a time, from there coming to Clayton where she had lived for 14 years.
After an illness of four months, patient suffering, with her children and friends by her bedside, on Sunday morning March 17, 1918, at the age of 87 years, she answered the summons of the Master, to join the loved ones waiting on the shore of the Great Beyond, and to hear the Savior say, "well done thou good and faithful servant enter into the Joy of the Lord."
[she is survived by] Elias Brock, residence unknown; John Brock, LaCrosse, Wis.; Hiram Brock, Youngstown, Ohio; Dr. W.B. Brock, Oakville, Iowa; Mrs. Bell Shepherd, Gary, S.D.; Miss Edith Brock, Clayton, Iowa; Mrs. Adelia McGarry, Willow City, N.D.; Mrs. Laura Rhoda, Fort Scott, Kansas.
The funeral was held in the M.E. church at Clayton, March 19, at 10:30 o'clock, Rev. C.H. Mead of Guttenberg officiating. Interment at Garnavillo.
Her passing leaves a vacant place in the hearts of her many friends as well as the relatives left behind.

Note: Her death certificate (familysearch.org) gives burial place as Garnavillo, as does the obituary. Most likely she is buried in the Old Garnavillo cemetery with her husband and infant daughter, although a gravestone is not extant.
