Died: Near Winona, Minn., on Thursday, Nov. 14th, aged 61 years, Mrs. Hannah, consort of Mr. John Hammer.
The deceased was mother to Mayor David Hammer of this city. On receiving intelligence of her sickness he instantly started to see her, but neither the speed of steamers or railways permitted him to meet her alive. She expired six hours before his arrival at the home of his parents. The survivor of this long-lived pair is now 81 years old.
Our sympathies are extended to all the family, but particularly to the old gentleman who is left to mourn the loss of her who was his partner in youth, his stay in manhood, and his company in age. How lonesome for him when the chair beside which he sat for so many years is now vacant, while Memory is now busy with the past! Youth may re-marry and measurably forget the lost and loved one; this relief is not for the very aged. Let us sympathize with the living while we mourn for the dead.
