Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 25 May 1911.
Mrs. George Russell died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. L. D. Diers, in Humphrey, Neb., on Thursday morning May 18th, following a second stroke of paralysis, which afflicted her on the Monday evening previous.
Mary F. Baker was born in Mew York state Sept. 9th, 1835 and was married to George Russell in October 1855. They made their home on a farm in this township for many years until finally advancing age caused them to relinquish its labors and they came to Elkader to live.
Some two months ago Mrs. Russell sustained her first stroke of paralysis, since which time her health has been very poor. Her daughter, Mrs. Diers, had been here caring for her and about two weeks ago Mr. and Mrs. Russell accompanied her to her home in Nebraska for an indefinite visit; hoping the change would be beneficial. At first it seemed to be as they hoped, then the second stroke came almost without warning and she never regained consciousness.
Her remains were brought here on Saturday and the funeral services were held Sunday afternoon from the home, Rev. Franke officiating. Many old friends assembled to escort her to her last resting place in the East Side cemetery.
Besides her sorrowing husband, who had been her companion for over fifty-five years, also leaves four children, two sons, Frank, of Murdo, S.D., and Charles, of Mound City, S.D.; two daughters, Mrs. George Perry, of Cedar Rapids, Ia., and Mrs. L. D. Diers of Humphrey, Neb.; twelve grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Her children were all present at the funeral services except Frank, who was prevented by a serious accident, which occurred to his wife a day or so previous to the death of his mother.
Mrs. Russell was a true wife, a kind and loving mother, a sympathetic friend and neighbor and while the years had taken many of her friends to the great beyond, there are still a large circle, who will miss her and who sorrow with the relatives in their bereavement.
