Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 20 July 1911. Garnavillo News column.
After months of suffering, Henry Dettmer, one of our esteemed citizens and early settlers, quietly passed away on Saturday afternoon, July 1st.
Mr. Dettmer had been afflicted with stomach trouble for some time, which later developed into cancer of the stomach and dropsy.
Clamor Henry Dettmer was born in Lockhausen, Essen, Hanover, Germany, on Dec. 30, 1838. He came to Garnavillo in 1854 and remained here for several years, after which he went to California. Some six years later, in 1869, he returned to Garnavillo, where on Feb. 25, of the same year he was united in marriage to Maria Brandt. They took up their abode on a farm in Read township. Later on they returned to Garnavillo and purchased the Gillett farm, where they continued to reside until their removal to town, in 1902. Five children were born to this union: Emma Schmidt, of Elkader; Amelia Kregel, Emma Wirkler and Hermon, of Garnavillo township, and Helen at home. These, with the sorrowing wife and a host of relatives and friends, are left to mourn his departure.
Funeral services were held at St. Peter's church, Monday afternoon, July 3rd, Rev. Basholm conducting. The remains were laid to rest in the family lot in the new cemetery. The Garnavillo Socialer TurnVerein, of which the deceased was a member, escorted the funeral cortege to its final resting place.
Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Heins and Fred Splies, of Luana; Henry and J. H. Schuette, Herman Rose, Chris F. Meier, Jos. Beucher and son Otto, of Postville, were among the out of town people who attended the funeral.
