Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 20 July 1911.
John Cherne was born at Winkel, Austria, on July 12th, 1874. When a young man of 18 years he came to this country. In 1897 he came to Clayton county and for a time was in the jewelry business in this city. About 12 years ago he was married to Miss Emma Heiden, of this county. Later the family moved to Duluth, Minn., where they have since resided. Mr. Cherne was taken sick in October of last year. Everything possible was done by his family to prolong the life of the beloved husband and father, but God in His wisdom had willed otherwise and called him from this world on Saturday, July 15th, at the age of 37 years and three days. His early death is mourned by his deeply afflicted wife, Emma, and four children, viz: Lulu, Alfonse, Clifford and Realto. One daughter, Lillian, preceded her father in death. He also leaves a mother, who is still in the old country, a brother Charles, of Guttenberg, a sister Mary, of Pittsburg, Pa., and a host of other relatives and friends.
His remains were brought to Elkader on Tuesday evening from Duluth, Minn.
Funeral services were held at the German church yesterday afternoon at two o'clock, conducted by Rev. Franke, after which the remains were laid to rest in the East Side cemetery. May his soul rest in peace.
