Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 22 June 1911.
Walter George, oldest son of George and Mary Burghart, was born in Clayton County, Sept. 23, 1901. He had spent a happy boyhood in health and strength until about 2 weeks ago, when on his way to school, he accidentally stepped upon a strand of barbed wire, which he seemed not to notice until he began to limp, but would not tell his parents. His father, however, saw him limping and after questioning him, he examined the spot and found it festered. After opening the boil the boy seemed as well as ever, until he complained about his hip. A physician was called in and diagnosed the case as blood poison, which in a few days terminated the bright and promising life. He died June 18, 1911, aged 9 years, 8 months and 26 days. He leaves to mourn his untimely and sudden departure, besides his parents, 8 sisters and one brother, besides hosts of warm friends. He will be missed sorely as the family were looking to him as the father's helper when he became of age. When we reckon with this flesh it is a disappointment, but when we reckon with the spiritual we reckon in hope.
The funeral was held Tuesday, June 20, with the scripture lesson and prayer at the house and sermon at the Congregational church at Garnavillo, Rev. R. G. Heddon, of the Elkader Congregational church, officiating. Interment at Garnavillo cemetery.

Note: surname spelling on his gravestone in the old Garnavillo cemetery is Burghardt.
