Henry Schadle was born in Wabash county, Ill., Oct. 22nd, 1829 and died in Volga City, Ia., June 9, 1911, aged 81 years, 7 months and 17 days. He was married to Mary Augusta Graves in the year 1867. Of this union there were nine children, all living except Charles. He is survived by his wife and six sons; James, of Clayton; Joe, Bird and Ralph, of Volga City; Roy, in California; Clem, of Monona, Ia., and two daughters, Mrs. Mary Caughill, in California, and Mrs. Nellie Moser, living in Cedar Rapids. Mr. Shadle came to Iowa in 1844, and settled in Davis county. In 1849 he went to California, during the gold excitement and came back to Iowa in 1856. He returned to the west, after that, and during the time he went to Australia and was mining gold there. In 1897 he went to Alaska, up into the Copper River country and was gone about one year. In all he crossed the Rocky Mountains five times. Ten years ago he had a stroke of paralysis and has been in bed ever since. Since then 54 friends of his have died or left Volga City. Mr. Shadle was a good friend and neighbor, always ready to help the unfortunate and always on hand to help on any public occasion
