Mrs. Katharina Engel Backhaus, nee Walke, was born on Sept. 15, 1844, in Wissington, Hanover, Germany. In 1854 the family came to America settling in Clayton County, Iowa. In 1861 she was united in marriage to Karl Backhaus. Nine children were born to them, three dying in infancy and the eldest daughter Katharina, married to Adolph Plath, of Manly, who preceded her mother in death a few years ago. Deceased spent the last years of her life with her husband at the home of their son August. For the past year she has been helpless, having suffered a paralytic stroke. She gradually grew weaker and on Friday evening, Nov. 17th, death came to her relief. She leaves her devoted husband, one daughter Sophia, wife of Henry Henning, of Farmersburg; four sons, Herman, John and Henry, of Manly, and August, living on the home place; twenty-eight grandchildren, one brother and one sister. Funeral services were conducted at the Ceres church by Rev. Bosholm and interment in the Ceres cemetery.
