Clayton County Register, Thur., 2 Dec. 1926.

John McDowell, the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Newton McDowell was born January 1, 1880, on a farm four miles north of Colesburg, departed this life November 18, 1926, at the age of 46 years, 10 months and 18 days. His father died when he was eleven years of age and he was left to care for himself.

He was married to Norma Elsie Barnhart Oct. 4, 1905. To this union were born six children: Mrs. Viola Friedlein of Osterdock; Thomas, Lucille, Milly, Wilson and Stanley all at home. He was converted and joined the United Brethren church Emerson class of which he has been a faithful and consistent member.

Deceased was a man who was a friend to all who knew him, a devoted husband and father, a kind and accommodating neighbor and will be greatly missed. He has been in poor health for nearly three years. His last illness had extended over a period of two weeks. All that medical skill and loving care could do was not sufficient to keep him longer and when the summons came he was prepared.

He leaves to mourn, besides his wife and children, one grandchild; one brother, Robert McDowell, of Greeley, Iowa; one sister, Mrs. Hattie Coon, of Freeport, Ill., and one half-brother, Joe Hunt, of Charles City, and a host of neighbors and friends.

Funeral services were held at Emerson chapel, interment being made in Brown cemetery.
