Clayton County Register, Thur., 11 Nov. 1926.

The last rites for Wm. Bauer, pioneer farmer of Clayton county, were held here at Elkader in St. Joseph's church last Monday morning. He had died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Max Opitz, near Strawberry Point last Friday morning at the advanced age of 79 years.

For the past six months he had been ailing and all that could be done to lighten his load was done by the daughter and her family.

Wm. Bauer was born at Bavaria, Germany, in 1847 and came to this country with his parents, first settling at Dayton, Ohio. Later they located near Garnavillo in this county, where he resided the greater part of his life. He was united in marriage to Amelia Hochhaus, who preceded him in death six years ago. To this union eight children were born, six surviving and two preceded the father in death.

The surviving children are: Fred Bauer, Elkader; Charles Bauer, No. Buena Vista; Mrs. May Opitz, Strawberry Point; Mrs. Paul Schammel, (next line blurred) Arthur Geiger, both of Dubuque. 27 grandchildren and a brother, Christ Bauer of Guttenberg also survive.

Rev. J. J. Murtaugh of Edgewood and Rev. J. P. Taken of Elkader officiated at the funeral services and interment was made in St. Joseph's cemetery here.
