Monona Leader, 11 July 1963.

Funeral services for Herbert Herman Goedken, 46, were held Saturday morning, June 29, at 11:30 o'clock at St. Patrick's church in Monona with Rev. Nestor Goedken of Chester, his cousin, officiating at the funeral mass.

Burial was in the parish cemetery with American Legion rites at the grave. Mr. Goedken died Wednesday morning, June 26, at his home after a lingering illness. Mrs. Goedken's father, Louis Berns of Garnavillo, died five hours earlier. Mr. Berns' funeral mass was sung at St. Joseph's church in Garnavillo, Saturday morning at 9:30 o'clock.

Mr. Goedken was born at Petersburg, Oct. 7, 1916, a son of the late John T. and Anna Scherbring Goedken. He was married to Claudine Berns of Garnavillo, Aug. 19, 1941.

After serving three years in the armed forces in the South Pacific, they settled on a farm southeast of Monona in 1945. Because of the seriousness of his illness, they sold out their farming equipment and livestock in December, 1961. They continued to live on the farm.

Preceding him in death were his parents, two sisters, Ida and Martha, and a brother Victor.

Surviving are his wife, Claudine, and seven children ranging from 20 to 7 years in age. They are Mrs. Cyril (Virginette) Frommelt of Garnavillo, Lu Ann, Darlene, Donald, Elaine, Marcia, and Jo Ann, all at home. Other survivors are a sister, Regina of Dyersville; and three brothers, Vincent of Monticello, and Ray and Joe of Dyersville.

Music at the services was provided by the seventh and eighth grade choir of St. Patrick's school. Eunice Swestka was the organist.

The Knights of Columbus served as an honorary escort.

Pallbearers were: Floyd Gruel, Virgil Kurth, Willis Meier, Calvin Henkes, Dayton Marfilius, and Harvey Wirkler.
