Fred Ortman, a former highly respected pioneer resident of Clayton county, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. James Wooldridge at Mason City, Iowa, with whom he had been making his home of late years. Deceased was born in Germany, and was past 88 years old when the Angel of Death called him to the Great Beyond. When a young man he came to the United States, settling in Clayton county. He was united in marriage with Miss Hannah Tackman, who preceded him in death several years ago. For a time he was successfully engaged in farming in Volga township, thence going to Garber, Iowa, with his family, where they resided for many years. Mr. Ortman was a faithful member of the Lutheran church and was a kind and true father and friend and was an upright citizen in every respect, loved by all who knew him. His death is deeply mourned by one daughter, Mrs. James Wooldridge, of Mason City, several grand and great-grandchildren, one brother, Henry of Littleport and numerous other relatives and friends by whom this good and true man will be sadly missed. The body was taken to Elkport for burial, where the funeral was held on last Friday.
