Elkader Register, Thur., 6 May 1926. Strawberry Point column.

Helen Marie Turner was born in Victor, New York, March 21, 1928. She was the eldest of eight children, all of whom she has survived. When seven years of age the family moved to Milan, Ohio, where she lived until she was united in marriage to Mr. Franklin Robert Buckley of Freeport, Ill., Oct. 12, 1853. Mr. Burkley preceded her in death May 5, 1902. In 1854 she came to the farm home three miles east of Strawberry Point where she lived until the family moved into the town house in which she passed the remainder of her life. She was the mother of six children, five daughters still living. Her only son, Parke, died April 1, 1925. This great sorrow she bore with her accustomed courage. Her mind was alert and her interest in life until the last was keen. Although her physical powers grew weaker her mental grasp was strong. She was a charter member of the Congregational church and shared the burdens of its early days and always carried its welfare on her heart. She was interested in the affairs of the community and had an unusual grasp on the questions of the day. She appreciated good literature and it was remarkable how she could repeat passages of the Bible, and poetry, often learning poems in her later years. Her friends will remember many poems which they have heard her repeat, Whittier and Wordsworth were her favorites. Her life was notable for its many years, for its wide experience, for its many friendships, for its long continuance in one place and for the complete preservation of all her mental faculties to the last. In her administration of her home, love and duty met, so her children prize their memories of her, not only as she kept the house or prepared the food and ministered to their needs, but they remember her small daily sacrifices, and her lovely Christian character. The five daughters surviving her are: Mrs. Sarah B. Taintor of Winter Park, Florida; Mrs. Eva B. Newberry and Miss Helen Buckley of this place; Mrs. Jessie B. Alderson of Stanley, Wis.; and Mrs. Mary A. Alderson of Dubuque; also three granddaughters, Mrs. Harriet Hall of Le Roy, Minn., Miss Mary Taintor of Ripon, Wis., and Mrs. Katherine Haun of Milwaukee, Wis.; also five great-grandchildren and a (several words blurred) -vices occurred Monday afternoon at the home, conducted by Rev. C. H. True of Edgewood, an old friend of the family, assisted by Rev. Maxwell, pastor of the Congregational church, and Rev. Turner, pastor of the M. E. church. Interment took place in the family lot in the local cemetery. Winter snows will cover that hallowed grave and May flowers will decorate that simple mound of a dear friend beloved by all.

(Note: The surname Buckley/Burkley was spelled both ways in the article, as shown. WPA records indicate Helen Turner Buckley 1828 - 1926 as buried in Strawberry Point cemetery.)
