Elkader Register, Thur., 29 Apr. 1926.

A beloved mother was called away from this land of woe, sorrow and sadness to the land of eternal cheer, charm and gladness on Thursday. (several words blurred) should reach the limit of human life as set by the psalmist when he says: "The days of our years are three-score years and ten and if by reason of strength they be four-score years, yet is the strength, labor and sorrow, for it is soon cut off and we fly away. (Psalm 90-10.)

This beloved mother is Mrs. Frederick Haverland, nee Heuer. Our departed sister's cradle stood in the village of Klein-Beuster in the province of Saxony, Germany. She saw this world's earthly light September 27, 1848. There she was baptized and confirmed. On the other side of the Atlantic our deceased sister was united in marriage with her late husband, Frederick William Haverland, who passed away April 12, 1896. To this blessed union eleven children were born. Eight preceded their dear mother in death. In 1883 our departed sister came over to this land of Old Glory, where she lived in Clayton county.

She leaves to mourn three children, namely: Paul Haverland, Read township, Mrs. Henry Kottman, Giard township and Mrs. John Frommelt of Dubuque; eleven grandchildren. Many other relatives and friends mourn this deceased soul. She lived thirteen years in the home of her daughter, Louise, Mrs. Henry Kottman in Giard township. It is indeed true that all her children did for their dear mother what was possible in order to make her happy and comfortable in her declining years.

She reached the age of 77 years, 5 months and 5 days. Funeral services were held Sunday at the late home in Giard township and then at Zions Lutheran church at Clayton Center. Burial in the new cemetery at Clayton Center, Rev. Wm. Wuestenberg officiating.

(Note: Her given name comes from the obit of her son, Paul J. Haverland, which is posted on this site.)
