Elkader Register, Thur., 18 Mar. 1926. Local News Notes column.
E. S. Halstenson passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. V. L. Gilje, on Sunday evening, March 14th at 8:30. He had been seriously ill for about ten days with an obstruction of the bowels, thought to have been caused by cancer.
Embret S. Halstenson was born October 6th, 1852, on the farm in Marion township, owned by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Syver Groth Halstenson and had reached the age of seventy-three years, five months and eight days. He grew to manhood on the home farm, which he later purchased and on which he lived until about twenty years ago.
On February 19th, 1880, he was married to Miss Mary Anderson, also of Marion township. Two children were born to them; a son Louis who died when he was seventeen years old, and a daughter Julia, now Mrs. V. L. Gilje of Elkader.
In 1905 Mr. and Mrs. Halstenson came to Elkader to live with their daughter and her family and remained here about two years when business matters called them back to Their farm. They remained on the farm for about two years and then again came to Elkader to make their home with Mr. and Mrs. Gilje. Mrs. Halstenson died here on March __th, 1921.
Besides his daughter, Mr. Halstenson is survived by two brothers, Halsten of Clermont and Carl of Elgin; two sisters, Mrs. Andrew Peterson of Minneapolis, and Miss Mary Halstenson of Clermont; three grandchildren, Louis, Lorimer and Vernice Gilje of Elkader, together with many other relatives.
Mr. Halstenson was a high type of man, a good citizen ready at all times to do his duty as such. An earnest Christian, active in his church and applying the teachings of Christ to relations with others in his everyday life. He was one of the founders of the Marion church, but after coming to Elkader he changed to the Norway church in Wagner township as it was more convenient to attend there.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, a brief service at the home at 9 a.m., Rev. Franks offering payer and a few appropriate remarks and then the remains were taken to the Marion church at Gunder where Rev. Tysdal officiated and he was laid to rest beside his beloved wife.
The pall bearers at the home were J. G. Hempel, Albert Allen, Ben Leonard, Louis Bente, Nels Glesne and H. L. Griffith. At the church there were six cousins, H. E. Groth of St. Ansgar, K. Houg and E. Houg of Elgin, T. J. Olson and E. S. Landsgard of Gunder, and H. H. Groth of Clermont.
