James E. Marshall, another one of Clayton county's highly respected pioneer residents, passed away on Sunday morning, January 10, 1926, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Charles Minger, in Millville township, at the age of 75 years, 4 months and 27 days. The cause of his death being heart trouble. He had been in poor health for several years when death called him. Deceased was born at Salem, Ohio, on August 13, 1850, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Marshall. When nine years old he came to Millville township, Clayton county, Iowa, with his parents, where he was reared and educated. In the spring of 1871 he went to Kansas, returning to Delaware county, Iowa, the same year. He resided there two years, then went to Nebraska, where he was successfully engaged in selling McCormick farm machinery for two years, and afterward went with a freight outfit from Norfolk to Deadwood and from there to what was known as the Ponca agency, and helped to move the Spotted Tail tribe of Indians to the Rosebud agency, freighting for them six months. He spent the following winter in Nebraska, and in the spring engaged in steamboating on the Mississippi river. In 1879 he returned to Clayton county, Iowa, and settled in Millville township, where he spent the greater part of the remainder of his life. For several years he resided at Guttenberg. On October 17, 1880, he was united in marriage with Miss Mary Ray at Guttenberg, who preceded him in death about ten years ago. Of late he had been making his home with his daughter, Mrs. Charles Minger, in Millville township, where he always received the best of care. Mr. Marshall was a kind hearted and true father, brother and friend, and a most worthy citizen in every respect. His death is deeply mourned by two sons, Omar, of Utah, and Mora, of Manly, Iowa. Five daughters, Mrs. Chas. Minger of Millville township, Mrs. Chas. Granden of Colorado, Mrs. J. H. Stearns of Columbus, Ohio, and Morga and Nellie Marshall, of Cleveland, Ohio; six grandchildren, four brothers, W. B., Tireman, Scott and Charles Marshall; also one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Moore, and many other relatives and friends by whom he will be sadly missed. Funeral services were held at the M.E. church in Guttenberg on Wednesday afternoon, Rev. D. D. Welch officiating. The body was laid to rest in the city cemetery, services at the grave being in charge of the Masonic fraternal order of which he was a faithful member. He was also a member of the Oddfellows fraternal order. The funeral was largely attended.
